When to use much and many and how to avoid mistakes.
MUCH and MANY – Is it much people or many people? How much furniture or how many furniture? Much chairs or many chairs?
Hier geht es direkt zur deutschen Version>>>
Much and many can cause many headaches (there’s a tip right there!) and in Dave’s video tip we get the answer:
If the noun has a plural, then you take many.
If the noun doesn’t have a plural, use much.
This can be as simple as thinking “Can I put an S on the end of the word, like with chairs and coins?” If the answer is yes, then you take many.
So, to look at the first examples of people and furniture, people is the plural (it’s irregular in that it doesn’t use an S, but it’s plural) so you use many. Furniture is singular, so you take much. For more info on irregular plurals see this video>>>, and we also show you some examples below.
Here are some common mistakes heard in class when using much and many:
“How many informations do we need?”
Problem: information never has an S and is therefore a singular noun. That’s why you need to say:
“How much information do we need?”
“How much children do you have?”
Problem: children is the plural of child. That’s why you need to say:
“How many children do you have?”
“I have much meetings today”
Problem: meetings is plural. That’s why you need to say:
“I have many meetings today”
Not so hard to get much and many right, if you think about it, is it? It’s a very important start, but the second step that takes some effort is getting to know the irregular plurals. Deutsche Version – Much and Many –
Much and Many – viel und viele
Wann verwendet man much and many richtig und wie vermeidest du Fehler?
Sagen wir much people or many people? How much furniture or how many furniture? Vielleicht sogar much and many chairs?
