this
that
these
those
there

Für das stille und flache th übst du diese Worte:
think
thought
thank you
thoughtful

  1. TH Aussprache im Wechsel explosiv und flach
Wenn deine th Aussprache für diese einzelne Worte gut klappt, dann wechselst du nun zwischen den beiden Typen ab.
  1. TH Aussprache in kleinen Sätzen

ENGLISH VERSION

The almost perfect th pronunciation – pronounce th correctly

The almost perfect th pronunciation? Can you learn this if you are not a native speaker?  Pronounce th correctly? But how? Explosively and vibrating or just a flat sound? In any case, it should not sound like an s.  In both cases, to get a good th pronunciation, you have to get the tongue out of your mouth. First (!) you put the tongue between your teeth with the tip of the tongue sticking out; then you take a deep breath and blow out all the air by pushing it through the spaces between your teeth and tongue. When your tongue tickles and vibrates, you produce an explosive “th sound”. You need this sound for a clear th pronunciation and to be able to pronounce words like “this”, “that”, “these” with th correctly.

To produce the flat “th sound”, your tongue simply does nothing when all the air is blown through the spaces in your mouth. This sound is needed for the pronunciation of words like ‘think’ or ‘thought’ or ‘thank you’.

An excellent way to make sure that you really get your tongue out of your mouth is to use a mirror. Watch your tongue very carefully! This way you can be really sure that you are practicing the th pronunciation correctly. Your tongue is a muscle that needs to be trained. It’s not so easy to get it right immediately.

Imagine if you had to climb a 4000 meter peak overnight.  It is impossible without practice. And so, in a way, it’s the same if you have to create a new sound your tongue doesn’t know yet.  There is no th sound in German, for example. Therefore, it is also difficult for many people to pronounce the th correctly. They do not  understand what exactly the tongue should do, where it can be positioned.

The tip of your tongue must be really far out, so that if someone hit you on the head at that exact moment, the tip of your tongue would fall off. The more often you do these th pronunciation exercises, the more ‘normal’ they become for your tongue, so that your pronunciation improves audibly.

To practice the th pronunciation in steps, you could do the following.

  1. th pronunciation only in sounds
First you practice only the two th sounds, i.e. the vibrating th pronunciation and the flat th pronunciation. Take your tongue out of your mouth and place it between your teeth
  1. TH pronunciation with words
Now you practice the th pronunciation of a whole word. Stand in front of the mirror. Take your tongue out of your mouth and place it between your teeth again. For vibrating th words use these words:
    this
    that
    these
    those
    there

For the silent and flat th you can practice these words:
think
thought
thank you
thoughtful

3. TH Pronunciation alternating explosive and flat th sounds
If your th pronunciation works well for the single words, you will now alternate between the two types.

  1. th pronunciation in small sentences
Next you try to put the th words into small sentences. These can be sentences that make sense or just use a jumbled set of sentences. But try to pronounce the sentences so that the th pronunciation is still very clear.5. TH Pronunciation practice with a cork
You can also practice your th pronunciation with a cork. CORK? Do I mean a wine cork?  Yes, a cork. You put it between your teeth and now press your tongue against the cork while trying to create a th sound. You do this a few times, then you take the cork out and try again. And you will see… your th pronunciation already sounds much better.  Practicing your th pronunciation can be fun.6. TH pronunciation in front of the mirror
If you can’t remember the words because of all the practice, use a pen for mirrors. This way you can write the words on your mirror and you will be reminded to practice every day.

I wish you much fun while practicing. I’m sure your th pronunciation will sound great very soon!  Practicing the right th pronunciation doesn’t have to be boring.smile
